COST OF RIBBED BRAKE DRUMS.

As you know, we have recently been testing ribbed brake drums in cast iron and high carbon steel. Our tests have so far shown that cast iron is quite as good as steel. However, we do not think that R.{Sir Henry Royce} will agree to the use of cast iron unless we can show him that it is cheaper than the steel.

We should be glad to have your opinion re the relative cost of these two drums taking into account the difficulties of machining the high carbon steel, heat treatment etc. as well as the raw material. The cast iron which we have selected is that supplied by Messrs. Lake & Elliott.
