We found when we were there both Mr. Hardy and Mr. Day were working continuously on it, and I have no doubt that the result will be that we shall get something good in a reasonable time. The full Epicyclic gearbox is being considerably modified and simplified. R.{Sir Henry Royce} is giving a lot of personal attention to these schemes and they are naturally altering from day to day. The latest scheme when we were there was that the first speed and reverse should be made the ordinary change as these gears are only engaged when the car is standing. The second, third, and top would be an easy change arrangement using two trains of Epicyclic gears and a salerni coupling. Another scheme which was going forward was to have an Epicyclic third which would give you a silent easy change gear with ordinary sliding gears for second, first, and reverse. Another arrangement which was considered was the present standard box with a helical third, which would give us a silent gear and with some form of free wheel for easy change. | ||
