RR. F.10. CAMSHAFT DRIVE, AND HAND TURNING GEAR.

We are surprised at the leakage from the camshaft drive, as the whole drive and retaining tubes appear to be the wrong way up. The one shewn in Lec.1993 referring to Eagle 16. in section, is a shaft driving the lower camshafts and is arranged correctly for a camshaft below the crankshaft.

Not only do the retaining tubes want reversing, but the drive, and both bevel gear shafts.

Also it would appear to be an improvement if 4 keys were used and the coupling hardened, instead of 3 ¥ keys unhardened and a hole for the plunger made of two sizes and drilled right through so that in the event of the plunger sticking, it could be pushed out with a pin punch, or wire nail.

The plunger in the corrected position would only have to hold the coupling up instead of supporting the whole shaft.

It will be noticed that the bronze plug was provided to support this driving shaft, and that each of the couplings was intended to receive and somewhat retain the oil that drained into them.

We think the shape of the shaft near the fixed coupling is unnecessarily heavy.

With regard to the hand starter we should like to know if this is arranged to thrust against the worm wheel in the solid direction of its mounting. For the mounting of the driving bevel in the wheelcase,

we shew 1 in 48 taper, and the wheel stopping against the ends of the shaft castellations.

DERBY.
instead of 1 in 500 taper, and no stop.

I cannot understand why this taper was introduced, as it is not one of our standards Who is to blame for this error, and who inspected it when the trouble was investigated? It should not depend upon me to find it.
