For the attention of F.Attwater, Esq.

Dear Sirs,

We thank you for your quotation of 22nd. Dec. for moulded gear blanks. As mentioned during the writer's visit to you, we have been considering the design of the inserts of our gears in order to reduce the cost of production. A die cast aluminium centre, as in the sample Ford gear which the writer brought back with him, would appear to be the most economical and we have accordingly made preliminary designs showing such centres and enclose prints of these, Nos. SCD.312 and SCD.311.

Print No. SCD.312 shows alternative shapes for the teeth on the centre. In the end view shapes A and C simplify the production of the casting dies for the aluminium centre while we think that B gives the best mechanical connection between the bakelite and the centre. In the side view shapes E and D apply to any of the shapes A, B and C. E would appear to give a stronger shape to the bakelite while D may be easier for moulding. We have no definite preference for any of these shapes and would be glad if you would let us know your views. It is possible that all the shapes are difficult to mould due to their height, and we welcome your opinion on this.

Whatever shape of tooth is finally chosen for SCD.312 would also apply to SCD.311. SCD.311 also shows the modified
