CTS{C. Trot Salt - Carburation} File

Dear Robotham,

Many thanks for your letter of the 13th instant, in which you ask for further advice with regard to the position of the dry liner aluminium block that we were forwarding to you for inspection. I am sorry there has been so much delay in getting this to you, but I know that you have now received our letter saying that the block has been despatched.

Reverting to your letter of the 24th of January, under reference Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}7/JH, you asked if we had any experience on the fitting of short chromium plated liners in cylinder bores.

Some twelve months ago, when we were carrying out our experimental work on hard chromium plated bores it struck us then that if the amount of chromium plate could be cut down to, say the first two inches of liner, considerable expense would be saved, and we put through a number of blocks arranged in this way.

When they were fitted and final grinding was being carried out, we found that in certain cases there was a minute step between the chromium plate and the bore, and this, we felt, was going to be difficult to overcome and would not give satisfactory running. We did, however, send the blocks over to our Service Department for fitting in customers' vehicles and I am now trying to relate their position in service. When I get a full report I will forward this to you and will possibly arrange to send one of our young engineers to inspect conditions of the bores at the present time.
