Waller - Head of Chateauroux}3/AP.11.5.37 35-EX. PHANTOM III. The following points were noted before and during the return of this car to Derby. ENGINE Detonation to 20 m.p.h. with Esso Ethyl or Reformed Shell. Slow running deteriorated below 10 m.p.h. - period at 70 m.p.h in top and 50 m.p.h. in 3rd. Exhaust manifold stud broken on front port of B. block. Smoky exhaust slow running. Lost movement in hand ignition control due to wear of spherical bushes of lower front cross shaft by O.S.F. engine foot. Temporary petrol pipes throughout and no filter in Vee. Petrol pumps noisy when hot. Dynamo brush holder broken and repaired temporarily. Cover plate damaged and locking piece missing. CLUTCH Rattles from fingers. Fierce engagement with sudden release. GEARBOX Noise from side shaft or similar, developed in London but went off again before investigation was possible. Oil leaks front and rear. Considerable lift in rear mounting. Vibrations on lever over 60 m.p.h. PROPELLER SHAFT. No trouble. Vibration only felt by holding gear lever. REAR AXLE Hum on over-run at various speeds. BRAKES Servo squeaks - slight thumps, reduced by taking up adjustment two notches all round - Click on release - Light squeaks under wet conditions - Squeaks from yoke ends of rods and cables. SUSPENSION Loss of oil from damper control system causing loss of poundage on R.H. corners. Knocks from both rear dampers. Knocks from rear shackles. Broken front O.S. bump buffer. STEERING Again changed wheel position for straight ahead direction. continued | ||
