( 6 ) [Handwritten top right]: Wst- Carburetter Air Silencer. LOP. E.88088 Lec.5000. The stays under the bottom rear end of the silencer were deleted on this engine. The body of the silencer became loose on the rivets which attach it to the front circular end. If the deletion of the stays is to be retained, a stronger rivetted joint will be required, to carry the overhanging weight of the silencer. Controls. LOP. E.87271. Existing, complete to above LOP. the following scheme incorporating:- Lec.4949 Steady Bracket for ignition control shaft. E.88195 Support Bracket. [Handwritten in left margin]: Wst- What are you doing about this Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} At the end of the running, there were ten notches movement in the hand ignition control, due to wear in the spherical bearings of the lower front cross shaft between the frame and the front of the O.S. engine foot. It was necessary to re-set the controls in order to obtain full advance. The spherical bearings of the throttle cross shaft were also badly worn. The Arens control to the damper unit was inclined to be sticky and indefinite in action due to friction in the control and a toggling action of the connecting link under the steering box. Camshaft & Bearings. LOP. E.85281. Existing, complete to above LOP. modified as follows:- Lec.5319 Camform with reduced base circle to lengthen toes for use with deletion of hydraulic tappets. Base circles checked for error of .002". Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell}notified. The tappets were noisy if the clearances exceeded .008". This clearance was found to be necessary for the exhaust valves, so that with the irregular base circles it was extremely difficult to obtain silence and yet be certain there was sufficient working clearance. Much more lattitude is required. With this camshaft a true conception of valve quietness could not be obtained. No other camshaft was available when the car was completed. Dynamo & Water Pump Drive. LOP. E.87081. Lec.4406-4543-4614. Existing, complete to the above LOP & schemes. The female splines of the coupling on the end of the water pump were badly worn, but no trouble or noise occurred as a result. (contd) | ||
