Crankcase and bearings LOP.EW.1113

The bearings gave no trouble during the running. Bad oil leaks into the clutch housing occurred and slight leaks from the engine front past the oil retainer.

Cylinder Head EW.1011 LOP.

The engine was completely free from detonation and could, if necessary, be run on the cheaper grade 'Tourisme' petrol although Esso was used as a rule.

Valves and Fittings LOP.EW.917

The valve gear was generally noisy, and individual tappets came up badly at times. Idling was good at first but later deteriorated after fast running so that the engine frequently stalled. Excessive loss of exhaust valve clearance was noted. These troubles indicate sticking exhaust valves and the state of the stems substantiates this.

There appeared to be too much oil on the rocker gear, and the exhaust was inclined to be smoky idling. The oil consumption was twice as heavy as the Phantom III. running in France at the same time.

When removing push rods the bottom tappets lifted out of their guides and were not easily replaced.

No.7 valve spring Rs.{Sir Henry Royce's Secretary}540, Exhaust No.4. cylinder fractured after 634 miles.

No.6. valve, exhaust, No.3. cylinder, E.61299 -KE.965- fractured after 6500 miles running. The head fell into the cylinder and the damage caused rendered further running impracticable, and the car was driven back to the Works.

Carburetter LeC.5626-32-33

Production Stromberg 25/30 modified to above schemes ~~and incorporating~~ to prevent popping in exhaust. A bad flat spot existed at 12 m.p.h. on light throttle. No popping in the exhaust occurred during the mileage. (Reduced idle passage as present standard)

Difficult starting when cold was experienced due to the choke sticking. This is caused by the nip of the clamp bolt on the pipe from the air silencer.
