x 1300 Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/PJH.2/MH.{M. Huckerby} c. Roy.{Sir Henry Royce} 7th. October 1937. Messrs. The Hoffmann Manufacturing Co. Ltd., Chelmsford, Essex. For the attention of C.H.Smith, Esq. Dear Sirs, With reference to the last batch of 21 sample steering rollers, to your N.2/34, which you sent us, we have now completed our tests on these. All the rollers are very good for freedom from binding but six have been rejected for excess of preload. We are returning these six rollers for your examination and rectification. We have sectioned two of the previous batch for the purpose of examining the depth of casehardening. One of these, which we are returning under separate cover, shows a thin case on one side of the external V groove, apparently due to inaccurate setting up prior to grinding. While we do not think this particular example would give trouble in service, we suggest that you should ensure that it does not occur on future supplies, particularly in the ball tracks. We now consider that the last batch of rollers were sufficiently satisfactory to justify going ahead with normal production, with the 15 rollers we have accepted as the standard of preload. | ||
