SECRET. ORIGINAL. R1/M22.2.29. REC'D AT WW. 25.2.29. FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} (At Le Canade) L.H. SS.{S. Smith} ENGINE. X7772 (1) I had not remembered that the tappets were not vertical but were inclined already towards the cylinder bore. (2) So that if we are prepared to accept that the tappets need not be in line with the push rod the L.H. is simple. (3) My measurement of the blueprint shews that Sch. 6. is the best with present timing wheels and SS.{S. Smith} completely interchangeable. (4) The left hand engine would, and should, also have desaxe tappets; if the tappet bore is truly vertical the whole comes in quite easily and interchangeable. (5) I have not the slightest hesitation in saying we shall never detect any ill effect from (2) so go ahead on these lines. (6) I did not like the R.H. desaxe, and not the L.H. (7) Make the push rod clearance as much as convenient-ly possible. BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} says we can increase it. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
