No.11. Valve Spring. Alteration No. 3774/A.{Mr Adams}
R.{Sir Henry Royce} does not approve, and he is not convinced that this will reduce the tendency to break. The proposed increased stress is higher than used by us on cars or aero engines, and also by any other maker.
Our experience so far has been that the failures are due to faulty material, and R.{Sir Henry Royce} instructs that further investigation should be carried out by Mr. Elliott and Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} so as to evolve some method of overcoming the trouble which Oy. complains of, and which R.{Sir Henry Royce} can quite appreciate in view of our own experience.

No.12. Westinghouse Control Switch. Alteration No.3781/A.{Mr Adams}
R.{Sir Henry Royce} is not by any means favourably impressed with this switch and regrets that they wish to use same. He appreciates that under the circumstances there is no alternative, but considers that Springfield should continue in their investigations and action with various makers to obtain a better switch. He will criticise further on this matter when he receives the sample switch referred to in their report, which he has not yet received.

R.{Sir Henry Royce} does not object to this and cannot see that it will do any harm, but at the same time cannot see that it is necessary, as we have had no complaints or similar experience. He instructs that Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} should try this out and if O.K. adopt at Derby in order that the cars may be similar.

No.15. Nut on ball end stud of cross and side steering tubes plain instead of castellated. Alt.No.3880/A.{Mr Adams}
R.{Sir Henry Royce} does not approve of this. He considers it is not advisable, it is not effective, and it is not our practice. He feels that the cure may be worse than the present disease, and one may never be sure that the cone is really tight.

No.16. Means of adjustment for sliding tubes in gearbox. Alteration No. 3889/A.{Mr Adams}
R.{Sir Henry Royce} approves of this and does not see that it can
