Wiles to Testers Ru/Hym. From Rn.{Mr Robinson} c. RM{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/CES. c. Hd.{Mr Hayward/Mr Huddy} c. Mr. Barkworth. Transport. c. Mr. Oliver. Aero Service Dept., OIL CONSUMPTION. We are anxious to obtain accurate oil consumption figures for records of cars at present being operated by the Company. These are not very easy to obtain and we should therefore like the following procedure to be carried out. At approximately every 5,000 miles, we should like the crankcase to be drained and a definite, measured quantity of oil put in the engine. After covering another 5,000 miles, during which time, the oil added should be accurately recorded, the crankcase is again drained and the quantity in the sump measured, fresh oil being added as previously. If the car is fitted with a filter which keeps the oil in a reasonable condition, there is no need to throw away the oil which is drained from the sump. To get accurate results, it is necessary to adopt a standard technique in draining the oil. We attach instructions as to the standard procedure which we use for measuring oil in the crankcase.
