L 550 To Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} & Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} from Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}6/KW. 6.4.35. C. to C. C. to R.{Sir Henry Royce} C. to Hy.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} C. to MX.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} 25 HP. Steering. We have been making a preliminary investigation on one or two trials cars and cars on test, and believe that a distinct improvement can be made by adopting the recommendations on the attached sheet. The cross steering poundage has always been an arbitrary figure and we think was originally specified at an unnecessarily high load. We are making further investigations on the efficiency of the worms and nuts. We have fitted the shorter pendulum lever to C's car, which lowers the overall steering ratio and we think is a definite improvement. We are proposing to fit one to Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}'s car before we change his steering, and also subject one to 50 hours bump test with a view to standardisation.
