PEREGRINE OIL CONSUMPTION.

We do not think that we should be unduly alarmed about the oil consumption of 400 m.p.g. of the Peregrine in France. The car has been averaging 50 m.p.h. which is of course a condition which would be a rarity in customers hands.

We now know that GWH.{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux} has run his big end bearings, which would, of course, increase the oil consumption.

There is no doubt that we may be losing some oil via the carburetter breather.

We think that if the existing Peregrine was running under normal English conditions, the oil consumption would be about 1000 m.p.g. We are carrying out some tests to prove this.

We know that we can quite easily reduce the oil consumption by varying the scraper ring, but we think that it is doubtful whether we shall find it necessary to do this ultimately. We are making tests however.

Since we dispensed with the extra cylinder oil, we do not want the engine to run dry when starting up. This is likely to occur if the scraper rings are made too effective.

Our test bed figures of 1 1/4 pts/hr. at 4750 r.p.m. and 1 pt/hr. at 4000 r.p.m. shewed that we were not in a really bad position with a reasonable oil temperature (500 m.p.g. at a fixed speed of 65 m.p.h. cannot be considered too bad).
