Attention of C. T. Salt, Esq. Messrs. Rolls Royce Ltd., Derby. Dear Mr. Salt, We have sent under separate cover one half bearing which the writer brought back from Scotland this week, which has been run by Albions, and is, incidentally, the only one which has seized. We are sending you the half in which is a dowel^HOLE for locating ~~valve~~^bearing, and it appears as though the loading against this dowel pin has caused spreading of the material, which has been responsible for the seizure. We would, however, inform you that for some reason the sizes of the crank-pin given us by Albion, for which we forwarded these bearings strictly in accordance with your clearance recommendation were not satisfactory, and Albions had to scrape the bearings to be able to run same. Five bearings have proved reasonably satisfactory. We do not think you need pay too much attention to this bearing as being a failure, because in addition to scraping out, as mentioned above, they are running on a soft shaft, but Albions are keen on making experiments on the shafts as they exist, and we are accordingly making further bearings which will be diamond bored by themselves to finished sizes, which we will supply to them, and make a further trial. If it really becomes necessary to harden the shaft, they will investigate this, trying further bearings with hardened shafts to see what advantage may be gained in service. The peculiar point which I thought would be of interest to | ||
