To Sa. from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. to GJ. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} c. to Hy.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. to SD. S ORIGINAL GOSHAWK 11. CYLINDER HEAD. MODIFICATIONS TO REDUCE LIABILITY OF CRACKING X4225 THE JACKET OR EXHAUST VALVE SEAT WHEN THE EN- X4240 GINE IS RUNNING WITHOUT WATER. X4226 We send you herewith drawing No. Lec 1596 showing the above. This drawing illustrates the modifications referred to by Mr. Royce in his recent memo. and also shows a design for a sparking plug spanner specially for use with the Goshawk. Would you kindly send a model of this spanner to WW and cancel the instructions to send one of the spanners used for the aero engines. We are anxiously awaiting the results of the Experimental department's tests to determine whether the Goshawk cylinder head is benefited by having 3 water outlets on the side instead of one at the front end. What we want to know is does the former system reduce the amount of steam in the water system when the water boils and thus save any of the amount of water thrown away in the overflow. If we do find it necessary to have 3 water outlets on the side, then some further design work is necessary on the scheme of ignition wiring, and the radiator will also have to be made suitable but this design work will not be proceeded with until we receive the report of the Experimental department.
