COPY. CONFIDENTIAL. REPORT ON MR. J.C.W. HUMFREY'S INVENTION --------------------------------------- By Professor L.N.G. Filon, D.Sc., F.R.S., Professor of Applied Mathematics, University College, LONDON. --------- 1. MODE OF ACTION. This invention consists essentially of a 'one-way' clutch for transmitting motion from a primary actuating mechanism to a secondary shaft, both the primary and the shaft being made to revolve about the same axis. The action of the clutch is as follows:- [DIAGRAM of a clutch mechanism with labels C, D, U, V, A, B, E, F, W, X, Y] FIG. (1) A portion XY of the secondary shaft is contracted into a neck UVW, as shown in fig. 1, this neck being suitably shaped in a manner to be explained. This neck passes through a collar ABCDEF, rigidly attached to the primary, and the inside of this collar is shaped so as to correspond to the shape of the neck, but in such a way as to leave a ring-space between the two. | ||
