COPY. To BJ. from PN. {Mr Northey} PN {Mr Northey} 15/DN30.9.24. NEW EXHAUST NOISES: 40/50 H.P. Arising out of the provision of our new system of brakes, there has had to be a modification in the exhaust fittings. Whereas in the past there have been two down pipes from the manifolds, there is now one only. Whatever may be the reason, the fact remains that, especially at times when the throttle is fully open, there is an unpleasant amount of "tinny" exhaust sounds arising from this new arrangement, which are very similar in description to the sounds made by an engine when it is "pinking". The closed 40/50 HP. which I tested to-day for use as a French Trials Car, I passed as being generally satisfactory in spite of the fact that this exhaust noise in question was very much in evidence, but no more so than in the cases of chassis of this type which I had tested at the Works. The brakes were specially good. I think that every effort should be made by the Experimental Department to tackle this new sound that with a view to obliterating it, before too many chassis suffer from it, for I feel we shall most certainly receive complaints from owners who are at all particular.
