Continued. (2) Messrs. Rolls-Royce, Ltd., D E R B Y. August 6th 1930. We are of the opinion, therefore, that the failure is due to overstressing. The fracture has started at the oil-hole in the top clip plate where the stresses are augmented, and has then developed in the manner typical of fatigue failures. The second and main plates have fractured subsequently on account of the increased stress to which they have been exposed after the failure of the top clip plate. We would remind you that these springs were made to your instructions. Furthermore, it was pointed out to Mr. Bailey before manufacture that they would be highly stressed. Please see your letter reference BY8/G of 19th May last. Yours faithfully, THOS. FIRTH & SONS, LIMITED. Director. | ||
