X.4429. Hs {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} /Rn {Mr Robinson} 5/AD. 13th August, 1930. Messrs. Thos Firth & Sons, Norfolk Works, Sheffield. Dear Sirs, With reference to your letter HWP/AR/649. of the 6th inst. we note what you say about these springs. We ourselves are not so disappointed with the performance of these springs since one of them completed 44 hours running on our intensive test with only a fracture of the bottom plate. In these circumstances we do not see that these springs can be considered to be heavily over-stressed because it is well above the life which we can get with our standard springs. However, we quite appreciate that the top clip plate is the one which fails first and which, in consequence, causes the failure of the top plate and we should like you to give us your suggestions as to how you would like us to improve this plate with a view to increasing its life. You will appreciate this is a type of spring we intend to use on a certain number of cars. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED. | ||
