CONDOR 111: ROCKER BOX LEAKS.

Trouble has been experienced with oil leaking from around the rockers of the inlet valves under certain conditions, these being when the engine is mounted on the hangar fitted with a Tractor propeller.

When the engine is run on the test bed, the oil leaks disappear. The inference drawn from the above, is that the air stream from the propeller is causing a depression in the recessed portion of the rocker box in which the rocker arms work, and is drawing oil from the box.

A test was made on the hangar using a four-bladed propeller and from observations taken while the engine was running, it was seen that the oil started to leak from around the inlet valve rockers that are farthest away from the prop. in each box.

The small hole which is supposed to drain any oil that may leak from under the rocker back to the camshaft case, was then plugged up. This had the effect of stopping the leak and after running 2 hrs. the rocker boxes were as dry (externally) as at the commencement. The above was proved by un-stopping the holes again and after running 5 mins. the leaks returned in their worst form.
