X9940 W Mr. Hives Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} BY6/H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} 9. 5. 24. E.A.C.III. MODIFICATIONS TO PARTS ON FRONT BRAKE. The following modifications are necessary to Brake parts on the Front Axle in order to obtain what Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} considers necessary. 1. A flanged collar must be added to the Toggle operating shaft which will incline outwards from the bush, and be of sufficient diameter to intervene between the boss and the Toggle Lever Seating on the shaft, with the object of preventing oil leaking out from the shaft, running along the Toggle Bearing and dropping on the Brake Drum. To do this will necessitate shortening the boss on the piece for adjusting the position of the lever. 2. The bracket securing the bearing is held on at present with three bolts having countersunk heads and screw-driver slots. One of these bolts, the one which demands a slot cutting in the small pressing, we added to act as an oil guard, must be replaced by a stud rivetted over on the inside. This will obviate the necessity for cutting the half moon out of the oil guard. 3. The Aluminium cover should be indented where the oil drain hole through the flange comes, as at present the cover locks up the drain hole. 4. The bending moment spring in the form of the coil of wire on the spindle, must be strengthened by 20%. This may necessitate adding more coils in order to keep the stress down. I think the present stress figure is on the high side, and should be reduced if possible so that the maximum stress does not exceed 90,000 when the increased strength of spring is used. 5. The position of the boss securing the end of the Brake shaft on the axle at the end nearest to the wheel should be moved inwards and downwards slightly. The distance from the centre of the axle should be 10.500 instead of 10.700 and at the same time the position of the boss should be lowered slightly without lowering the shaft, to ensure a reasonable clearance in the facing up of the boss in question to prevent the lower flange of theaxle being cut into at this point during the facing operation.
