Re R.{Sir Henry Royce} W. Wire Wheels. X421

Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager}
EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}7/W/L61213.

With reference to Mr. Royce's memo R7/P241113 and yours Wor{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager}/SM8/L41213, these wheels, with latest type of locking device, i.e. large ring nut, were fitted to the Spanish Trials Cars, and I had an excellent opportunity of noting the behaviour of these under strenuous conditions, and I must say that on the whole I found them very satisfactory and they never failed.

They certainly were very simple, but it was absolutely essential that the nut was driven up quite tight with a mallet, otherwise we had the "creaking" trouble.

The self-locking device worked satisfactorily, so far as not allowing the wheel to come off. Also, they actually screwed themselves up, but not so tight as to prevent the "creaking" trouble. Although the wheel in itself was not loose, there was a slight movement. This was the demonstration I made to Mr. Royce, and which he refers to in his memo.

Comparing same with Dunlops, they certainly were very simple and there is no trouble with the locking mechanism sticking, water and dirt getting into same and the trouble with the spanners not being satisfactory. They also seem to be better for being interchangeable. These are troubles we are having at present with the Dunlop wire wheels.

The fact of being able to use a "brooch" for the bore of the hubs of the wheels seems quite a good point as regards interchangeability.
