Die casting quotations, modifications for a Bentley crankcase, and material alloy options.

Die Castings.

(1) Simple Pieces.
We are sending you under separate cover drawings of our:-

Clutch Pit
Sump
Timing Cover
Rocker Cover

so that you can give us firm quotations of die castings, and castings in various quantities.

(2) Difficult Castings.
We agree that at the moment, the gearbox appears to be an awkward proposition for die casting, and as your tool room commitments are very heavy, we will not press for die castings of this item for the time being.

The Bentley crankcase, however, is of particular interest to us, and we are sending you forthwith a fully machined casting so that you can proceed with your recommendations as to what modifications are necessary in order to make this die casting as simple as possible. We hope that you will have made the necessary modifications to this casting, by plastering it up, etc. towards the end of next week when our Representative will come over to Birmingham to discuss your recommendations with you.

As soon as an agreement is reached, you will give us a considered estimate of die castings, and production of crankcases and cost.

We should like to be quite clear in our own minds as to the alloys you recommend, and the respective cost of the material. The information we have so far is as follows:-

RR.50. £136 per ton.
Birmasil £110 " " (This material takes the place of RR.50 in that it can be used for surfaces in contact with water.)
Alpax. £94 per ton. (It can be used for much the same purpose as Birmasil special, and might be considered for die castings and aluminium crankcases and cylinder blocks in one, i.e. where the water jackets are in aluminium.)
