Water Pump Rolls-Royce Ltd., DERBY. STEADMAN Dear Sirs, We have to acknowledge your letter of August 2nd, reference Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Std.1/AP, on the subject of carbon sealing rings. We note that you are proceeding with a design and we will be pleased to offer any criticisms on receipt of your layout drawing. Our Mr. Sparkes will arrange to visit you on August 23rd, as mentioned in our letter of the 30th July. In answer to the further questions in your recent letter, we would reply as follows:- 1). We have had limited success with our carbon bearings where these have been used in conjunction with water pumps and for the dual purpose of acting as a bearing and, at the same time, a seal. In most cases the efficiency of the seal is dependent upon the bearing wear, and it has been found that this is a major drawback. We would not recommend your using these bearings on an application of this type. 2). In view of our being unable to recommend carbon bearings, the question of life does not arise. 3). In order to obtain a long life with our carbon sealing glands, we recommend the use of ball-races to carry the pump shaft in order that the shaft may run true and free from the mal-effects of bearing wear.
