T.P.Gjers Esq., -2- July 4th.1912. be experienced in this respect as it is quite a reasonable proposition to fit balance weights to the felloe in order to bring this portion of the system in correct balance. This part can be corrected in manufacture and no further trouble will be experienced. The second item however is not a simple matter, as the balance of the inner tube is seriously affected by the lap joint usually adopted. Efforts were made to persuade the tyre manufacturers to fit the valve diametrically opposite to the lap joint, but we were informed that the proposition could not be considered owing to difficulties in manufacture. If we had been successful in this respect we should then have balanced the wheel and inner tube together by means of balance weights attached to the felloe. It is useless to attempt the balance of a wheel complete with inner tube at present, for the reason that the lap joint is not placed in any particular position relatively to the valve, and although the wheel could be made correct when despatched, the balance would be upset on the first occasion of a change of inner tube. With reference to the outer covers, we are of the opinion that little trouble would be experienced in this respect except when steel studded tyres are used and in the event of a number of adjacent studs being lost. We were interested to hear that you had succeeded | ||
