1282 Experimental Dept. Rm {William Robotham - Chief Engineer} /Swdl. {Len H. Swindell} 10/JH. 16th December, 1936. F.R.Banks Esq., Ethyl Export Corporation, Thames House, Millbank, London.S.W.1. Dear Sirs, We thank you for your letter and information with regard to Silchrome XCR steel for use as exhaust valves. You say they are running these unstellited on the Buick, this is interesting, as we are sending out a car for 15,000 miles test with valves in our S/SLV, unstellited. Up to the moment the efforts with regard to stelliting S/SLV have not been successful, in that burning of the S/SLV takes place when the stellite is applied. H.P.Smith, however is still carrying out various experiments in order to try and overcome this difficulty. We should be pleased if you could get a set of 12 of these Silchrome XCR valves for us, to the attached drawing EB.2970. If these valves can be run satisfactory on leaded fuels without stelliting this would cut down the ultimate cost quite approximately. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. | ||
