C. ROY{Sir Henry Royce} C. MX.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} C. EFC. BY4/G.14.3.28. 14th. March 1928. Messrs. North & Sons, Whippendell Road, Watford. Dear Sirs, R.O.1 MAGNETOS. ---------------- Our Test Department have been complaining for some time in regard to the efficiency of the above type of magneto. Their complaint is that they have returned several magnetos recently owing to the fact that they will not pass the spark on our test rig under conditions which were passed by the original supply quite satisfactorily. Magneto No. 103508 which we are returning for your special attention fails to spark on our test rig with an air pressure as low as 40 lbs., and the misfiring on a chassis under road conditions for this magneto occurs up to 25 miles per hour. Since we use this magneto as a standby our Test Department have never been very exacting in regard to slow running, and I am informed that they do not turn magnetos down so long as they will spark satisfactorily at 10 miles an hour and over, but recently there appears to have been a falling off in performance of the magneto so that even with this concession we are not able to pass quite a number of the magnetos supplied. Before actually giving instructions to despatch the magneto we should be glad to hear whether you would like us to return same or would you prefer to come up here and let Mr. Maddocks of the Test Dept. demonstrate the faults to you. Yours faithfully, TECHNICAL PRODUCTION ENGINEER. FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED. | ||
