RE VISIT TO RANSOME & MARLES IN CONNECTION WITH STEERING ROLLERS.

Yesterday April 2nd. I visited Messrs Ransome & Marles in connection with steering Rollers, and went into the grinding of these pieces, also the methods of checking, and acquired sufficient information to enable us to produce similar pieces here. Our chief difficulty is that we have not a suitable Van Norman machine for grinding the ball track by the generation method. Form grinding is not considered satisfactory.

After spending sometime in the shops, I discussed the situation with Mr.Hickling and he felt that the position had not been thoroughly investigated at their end before they wrote us on the 24th ult. During our discussion we suggested that our work represented a very small percentage of their output, to which of course they agreed, and rather than expect us to buy a machine specially for this job they were prepared to continuously grind the ball tracks, and also, if we found difficulties, to gring the Vee groove, even after completion of all outstanding orders. We to supply pieces with all other operations completed.

They will of course complete all outstanding orders, and within a month or 5 weeks of completion would be prepared to consider carrying on as before, making complete, or grinding the two major operations only which ever we desired. Meanwhile, we shall prepare for making the Cam followers and inner races here so that in the event of Ransome & Marles failing to carry on, we can start producing without any break in output.

We will get in touch with Ransome & Marles in the course of a few weeks, for a review of the situation.
