MODIFICATIONS TO BONNET, PHANTOM II.
We send herewith N.sch.3096, shewing modifications to the P.2. bonnet, the chief of which is the carrying of it over the dashboard.
We do not agree to an overhang of .187 ins. as this would mean that the bonnet would have to be cut off by the coachbuilder. We do not believe that all of our coachbuilders would make a job of this.
We have added wearing strips of steel to prevent the bonnet edge becoming wavy, and these in the case of the side plates are made to become stiffeners, and replace the aluminium ones now in use. The number of visible rivets is consequently reduced.
We have brought the bonnet down as near to the frame as possible and have done away with the nickel strip as on a modern body there is no line to match up with this strip, which is usually painted in an attempt to conceal it.
We have shewn the side hinges supported against the downward pull of the bonnet clips. You will note the arrangement of the end section of the side hinge. The last section is attached to the top plate so as to obtain the stiffness of the tube to re-inforce the top plate against bending.
Derby should ascertain that the side plate stiffeners do not foul the top panel when the bonnet is opened, and if they do so they may be cut at the top end with a longer chamfer to enable clearance to be obtained.
We sent to you yesterday a copy of a letter which we have sent to Park Wards re the scuttle finish of the 2nd exp. car.
