Mr Claude Johnson from F.H.R.

With reference to Mr Platford's sheet EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}34/T7612, re noisy side shafts on gear boxes.

We must struggle with these until such time as we have been through some experiments with reference to the epicyclic gearing.

I am not sure whether Mr Platford finds the chief noise arises from the reverse pinion or the side shaft, and although some cars are poor on this point, I think the majority of them are very good, and better gearing would not only cure this trouble, but would make the cars on the gear much quieter. This would be a still better way of tackling the problem.

The gear boxes as they stand wear exceedingly well and I think in use become more silent. I do not think that we can for the moment do anything to meet Mr Platford's wishes which are the same as my own as pointed out by the car which came to Le CanadelHenry Royce's French residence, and was bad in this respect.

The car we have here which is a well used one (No. 1601) seems quite good, and if they are all as good as there is very little anxiety on this score.

I think it will be better for us to concentrate on getting our gear change easier which will be considered at the same time as more silent running. F.H.Royce.
