oil relay.

It is desirable that the working of the relay should actually be checked on the car before it leaves the Works. (handwritten: Derby) This can be accomplished in the same manner as the initial test for the complete unit, the extension to lever E.72578 being so made that it can be fitted when the other controls are coupled up to the relay. The angular movement of the lever E.72518 should then conform with the specified curve.

POSSIBLE SOURCES OF TROUBLE.
(1) The commencement of ignition advance is delayed.
This may be due to :-
(handwritten: a) Cup leather perished or worn out.)
(a) Too great initial tension of governor springs.
(b) Any internal friction in governor.
(c) Grit between the two pistons.
(d) Lost movement on Lever E.72459 or between Cap E.72506 and Lever E.72504. (handwritten: d) Stiffnes of the control)

(2) Ignition will not return from the fully advanced position.
This may be due to :-
(a) Grit between the two pistons.
(b) The neck of Lever E.72459 fouling the top of Piston E.72503 when the governor is fully extended.
(c) 'U' leather on Piston E.72509 too tight a fit in bore of chamber. (handwritten: (c) Stiff Controls) (handwritten: Magneto Sleeve)

(3) Difference between ignition advance and retard curves.
This may be due to :-
(a) Lost movement as in (1) (d).
(b) Stiff 'U' leather as in (2) (c).
(c) Incorrect machining of parts on the pistons.
(d) Internal governor friction.
