BENTLEY BRAKE DRUMS.

I have seen the Brake Drum taken from stream-lined Bentley B-23-AE, and agree that in this particular case the splits in the Studs have not been opened. We agree also that an ommission of this sort is very serious.

I have investigated this with the Dept. concerned, and they have assured me that they have made a special point of opening these Studs, and the second operation of rivetting over the Nuts. In addition to this we have inspected all the Drums that were completed in the Dept. and in every case the opening and rivetting of the Nut has been carried out satisfactorily. We have now got an independent inspector going round all the cars on test, and up to the present he has reported that all the Studs have been opened. He has however, said that in his opinion a few might have been opened a little more. I can well believe that this may be so because the operation of opening up these legs is a delicate one, and if the opening out is too severe it may fracture the small 2.B.A Stud, and consequently the man just opens them sufficiently to avoid a fracture.

It is very difficult to know how this particular case has got through. It will be remembered that this particular Chassis was one of the original 15, and did not come back to the works for modification until after the 14 had been done by us. The stream-lined car, the 15th, was handled by the Experimental Dept. who fitted it with the new Pivots, etc. and the Axle was later sent to us for the quick-adjusting scheme to be fitted. During this time the Experimental Dept. had from us various material for the Brake Drum job, but we do not know if they actually touched this particular part of the Axle.

In the meantime, we are arranging to have all the Axles checked on cars at the works, and are, in addition,
