Report on Frame Test by bumping
Front wheels. X.193

The front wheels of chassis were run on the dynamometer drums fitted with 3" humps arranged alternately one on each drum. The drums were revolved at 105 revs. per min. The frame was 1700 type with 7 1/4" set down front horns. It was heat treated at the front end.

A cross member with a flexible pivot joint at each end was fitted. This cross member therefore did not control the side members in a fore and aft direction. The side members did not seem so stable behind the cross member as with a rigid cross member in position. The incidents of the test were as follows.

After running 7 mins. - Near side spring bolt broke.
" " 35 " - " " " "
" " 38 " - " " " "
" " 40 " - " " " "
" " 44 " - " " " "
" " 56 " - Off side cross steering lever broke.
" " 68 " - Side steering lever broke.
" " 90 " - Near side spring bolt broke.
" " 130 " - Off side spring clip broke.
" " 147 " - Near side spring clip broke.
" " 175 " - " " " "
" " 201 " - " " " "
" " 246 " - Near side front horn broke off through the forward holes of the cross member bolts. The holes had been plugged and drilled in a slightly different position but I do not think this has affected the time it has taken to break.
