TO R.{Sir Henry Royce} FROM DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/EV.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} ORIGINAL DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/EV{Ivan Evernden - coachwork}1/M9.7.25. Copy to - BJ. HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} re. CHASSIS 7.EX. FOR R.{Sir Henry Royce} X8770 We saw this chassis last weekend, and are making the following modifications:- (1) LUGGAGE CARRIER - DESIGN N. SCHEME 1819. The appearance of this was not altogether approved and we are sending you in a day or so a design eliminating the rounded corners, and also one of the cross tubes of the grid. We shall also slightly modify the operating handle and the Thackerary washer of the friction hinge. (2) PETROL TANK WITH 2 LEVEL DEVICE - N. SCHEME 1918. Mr. Royce would like the level indicator made to read the total amount of petrol in the tank, including the 3 gal reserve, that is to say, it would start at Zero when the tank is entirely empty. The tail lamp adaptors fouled the grid and we shall shew you where this can be placed. These modifications will follow in a day or so. (3) INSTRUMENT BOARD & FRAMED INSTRUMENTS - N.SCHS.1808 AND 1856. The patch of united instruments should be in the centre of the instrument board, and the design of starting carburetter and shutter controls will be moved to suit the same. The instruments should have white enamelled faces and black hands, but the first set may be made of standard instruments with silver dials and black hands, or black dials and white hands. An arrangement of the instrument board will follow probably today. (4) BONNET, RADIATOR, AND DASH. These were to EAC. 2. dimensions with taper radiator, but the bonnet was the old 40/50 length. The appearance was not liked as the side hinge looked to run downhill. The louvres at the top were kept horizontal instead of being a constant distance from the side hinge. The mock up scuttle used accentuated these effects. We have already sent to Derby instructions which will make this bonnet, radiator, and dash, the same as that used on 9-PK. and the other subframe cars, namely, 1" higher than 'V' series, with a 2¼" wider dashboard, the appearance of which we have already approved. The bonnet catches had insufficient clearances and the stem of the fork inside the catch being of nickel silver became easily bent. The general appearance of the louvres was not liked. (1) | ||
