Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}2/KW.7.10.36. Dynamometer Testing - Phantom III Axle and gearbox. In connection with our experiments to prevent third and second gears coming out of mesh, we have recently completed the following endurance testing :- (1) Rear Axle with larger Differential Washers :- 4 hours full torque Top Gear 1 1/2 " " 3rd Gear 2 " " 2nd Gear 2 " " 1st Gear The condition of this axle after the test was better than we have ever seen before. The bronze differential washers were less scored than usual. There were no cracks in the slightly weakened diff. pinions. As soon as 35-EX finishes its French test we shall standardise this arrangement to reduce the rate of development of axle backlash. (2) Gearbox with Cadillac Gears :- 7 1/2 hours full torque for constant mesh train 2 1/2 " " " 3rd speed train 2 " " " 2nd " " These gears have therefore done more than the usual test and appear satisfactory as regards strength. (3) Oldham Coupling to prevent 2nd speed coming out. N.Sch.4824. 2 hours full torque on dynamometer. 30 ascents and descents of Bwlch-y-Groes hill 20 racing starts. 20 shock clutch engagements with a "dead" engine. The middle ring had broken and the outer part was cracked. | ||
