20/25 & 40/50 GEARBOXES.
LEAKAGE OF OIL FROM BACK OF BOX.

Replying to BY3/G20830., the scheme which has always been fitted to the P. 2. gearbox (see the original N. schemes,) was intended to be applied to the 20/25. If there is a drawing shewing a hole returning oil from the chamber containing the thrower into the gearbox this is wrong, as the hole should be at the bottom of the thrower chamber leading into the open air. The object of this is that should oil creep along the 3rd. motion shaft, instead of being carried out on to the universal joint, and from thence flung on to the body, as it would be if there was no thrower, it is stopped by the latter, flung off into thechamber, and from there drained on to the ground through the hole.

We quite agree that there should be a drain below the bearing for carrying away the oil contained between the bearing and the screw thread, and this should apply to both Phantom and 20/25. boxes.
