"Test on Matrices for Rolls Royce Car Heaters".

The object of the test was to compare the efficiencies with regard to heat dissipation of the Mark III and Mark V matrices for the Rolls Royce Car Heater. The heater, using a Mark III matrix, was connected up and supplied with hot water by the Rolls Royce Phantom III engine. The inlet and outlet air and water temperatures were measured, also the water flow.
From the water flow and water temperature drop across the cooler, the heat dissipation of the block for the fixed fan speed was determined. All tests were then repeated using a Mark V matrix.

a). Mark III matrix.

Water flow:- 106 gals.per hour.
Inlet water temp:- 81.0°C.
Outlet water temp:- 77.6°C.
Inlet air temp:- 23.2°C.
Outlet air temps:- 58.5°C.,51.4°C.,61.8°C.,57.2°C.
Heat from water = 6,470 B.Th.Us per hour.
= 11.2 B.Th.Us per hour per °C difference inlet air to inlet water.
Airflow calculated from heat balance:- 1.6 cu.ft per sec.

b). Mark V matrix.

Water flow:- 104 gals.per hour.
Inlet water temp:- 81.0°C.
Outlet water temp:- 77.2°C.
Inlet air temp:- 22.5°C.
Outlet air temps:- 57.7°C.,59.6°C., 66.2°C.,64.0°C.
Heat from water = 7,150 B.Th.Us per hour.
= 12.15 B.Th.Us per hour per °C difference inlet air to inlet water.
Airflow calculated from heat balance:- 1.5 cu.ft per sec.

Result of Test.

From tests it is shown that the efficiency of the Mark III block on the basis of heat dissipation is 92.5 % of that of the Mark V block.
