Noisy magnetos on the Phantom engine, hypothesizing the cause is wear from the unlubricated automatic advance mechanism.

I have received a report from the Inspection Department that they are having considerable trouble with magnetos becoming noisy. The suggestion has been made that the magneto fitted to the Phantom engine is being asked to do something for which it was not designed and which it has not been called upon previously to perform. With the automatic advance, the advance and retard mechanism is brought continually into play and without any means for lubrication this must result in wear taking place fairly soon. As soon as this wear is sufficiently great a rattle is produced on the magneto itself and is transmitted to those controls connected with it. I should be glad of your comments on this matter. It does seem that the cam cage of the magneto which is without lubrication must be subjected to a good deal of movement and therefore wear and tear. Do you think that a lubricator on this part would be of advantage, or do you attribute the trouble to any other cause? CWB [Signature] | ||
