Referring to your memo CWB4/GM.11.3.27:

The fault of which you mention is one which we are endeavouring to correct. It does not appear from experiment that additional lubrication of the sleeve bearing over and above that which it naturally gets from the bearings would be any advantage.

Magnetos of the present standard construction are not always as quiet as desired in the first instance, and some of them have to be returned for correction; and one which is quiet originally may develop the rattle which you mention. A slight slackness in the control joints may also develop and assist in the development of noise.

A palliative for this which is being experimented upon at present is the provision of a completely enclosed armature tunnel which to some extent damps the noise. Ones such magneto is at present on one of the expl. cars and we hope shortly to receive two others. At the same time the Watford Magneto Company are producing a magneto of the sleeve-less type intended experimentally for our Phantom chassis.

We have had and still have Lucas magnetos for trial and these are very promising from the point of view of overcoming these technical defects, but as you may be aware, it has been ruled out as impossible to use Lucas magnetos at present owing to the bad reputation which that firm some years ago made for themselves on magnetos.
