X.2209 RE LEAKAGE PAST PISTONS WITH VARIOUS NUMBER OF RINGS.

Attached to Mr. Elliott's copy of this note is a copy of a summary on the Flow of Gases through orifices.

It is a well known thing that the discharge of a gas through an orifice or restriction does not increase indefinite-ly with rise of pressure, but reaches a limit when the ratio of the pressure on the two sides of the orifice or restriction attains a definite value.

This note is a propos of Mr. Hives' report EH2/AT20317 on the seven ringed pistons.

Below is a sketch of a set of curves representing the leakage past pistons with one, two, three etc. rings, against pressure. It is intended to show graphically the relation of leakage to number of rings.

Graph details:
Y-Axis: LEAKAGE
X-Axis: PRESSURE (Lbs/sq.inch ABS.)
X-Axis values: 0, 15, 125, 350
Curves: 1 RING, 2 RINGS, 3 RINGS, 4 RINGS, 5 RINGS, 6 RINGS
