500 c.c. Rudge Unit.

Period covered by Report.

24th November 1935 to 4th February 1936.

Total Running Time.

During the above period the unit has run 78 hours 30 mins.

Introduction.

This report is intended merely to summarise briefly the position of the unit, and the tests carried out since the issue of the last report Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Wd.{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead}1/GB.14.6.35 which covered 16 hours 40 mins. running time on the standard Rudge camshaft and semi-hemispherical head. Various comparative curves are given and an attempt has been made to explain the high performance of the engine.

The work done may be roughly classified into three sections:

(1) Work done on R.R. Modification I. camshaft. C.R. = 7.3
(2) Work done with Bentley camshaft. C.R. = 7.3
(3) Work done with Bentley camshaft. C.R. = 8.0

Section I.

In this section the semi-hemispherical head was fitted as standard, and exhaust and induction pipe tests were run (Figs. I & II). One detonation curve was taken on Shell No.1 fuel, but no signs of knock were discernible.
