(3) Soft case hardening.

(4) Eccentricity of roller in exceed of 0.001 clock reading on contact faces.

(5) Excessive width across A as shown on attached sketch causing contact on incorrect faces and damage to worm.

(6) Wide variations of size B on sketch.

So far as the functioning of the roller is concerned it is not necessary for the surfaces marked X X to be ground as these do not contact with the worm at any time.
