16th October, 1940.

Messrs. Rolls-Royce Limited,
DERBY.

Attention - Mr. W.A. Robotham.

Dear Sirs,

We thank you for your letter of the 6th instant addressed for the attention of Mr. Taub, giving the results of your check on the cylinder bore wear and oil consumption of the 10 h.p. engine you are using in a transport vehicle in your Experimental Department.

The figures quoted show the wear on Nos.1 and 4 cylinders to be nearly double that of the two centre cylinders. This condition alone would appear to indicate abnormal lubrication conditions, and, since the oil economy is rather high, and far better than one might expect on a transport vehicle, probably doing a considerable number of short journeys, we would be interested to know whether you are using your standard Price's Motorine "C" oil, which is in the VIS.40-50 class, instead of our standard recommendation of VIS.20 oil.

Yours faithfully,
VAUXHALL MOTORS LIMITED,

[Signature]

R.N. GALE.
Power Unit Field Engineer.
