September, 1919. Messrs. Rolls-Royce, Ltd., Nightingale Road, DERBY. Dear Sirs, For the attention of Mr. Hives. We have had a visit from Mr. Rippon, our Representative in your district, who informs us that you are wishful of obtaining a lubricant for your cars containing a large proportion of lard oil. Enclosed we submit for your attention an analysis of what we, after most extensive trials, consider the ideal article for lubricating an engine such as you manufacture. This contains 25% of Lard Oil and a very highly refined low cold test mineral Oil. We do not recommend more than 25% saponifiable matter, for in experiments we have carried out we find that if we have an excess of fat oil above this that it is apt to break up under heat, leaving mineral acids in the cylinders, which are detrimental to the pistons and rings, as well as being an inefficient lubricant. The particular Oil which we are submitting we have run for thousands of miles and find that it is not only a perfect lubricant but that the absence of carbon is almost extraordinary; any that does form can be wiped off with a rag. over - | ||
