Identifier  ExFiles\Box 47\3\  Scan445
Date  18th May 1932

CHASSIS. GKT-28. OWNER. MR. ANTWEILER.
"Hillgarth", Windermere.

Mulliner Saloon Body, Birmingham.

Owners complaint to F.J.Hallam (personally) 14.5.32.

(1) Bad knocking noise in engine.
(2) Excessive heat in body.
(3) Loss of engine cooling water.

On investigation complaint (1),due to bad engine gear rattle. Worst period 750 R.P.M. (approx).running light. Heard on road (audible) at about 15 m.p.h.

Complaint (2) owner suggested due to excessive heat from engine, and suspected inefficient working of thermostat control to radiator shutter. Although apparently working alright on the road (max.temp.78°C) the thermostat operation seemed rather doubtful with engine running in stationary position. With engine ticking over and water temperature 80°C, the shutters were open,but with slight finger pressure they could be closed and remained closed. Shutter mechanism was quite free. A new thermostat was fitted and tests repeated, shutters being fully open at 80°C and worked properly.
Note.(Old thermostat returned,now investigating per Wx.) EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}

Complaint (3).No water leaks. The owner's complaint about loss of water referred to the level of water in the radiator, and suggested that this complaint should not be taken too seriously, as he did not know the water level before the commencement of the run, Birmingham to Windermere.

The car will be returned to the Works in approximately ten days for complaint (1) to be made O.K.

(Sgd). F.J.Hallam.

18.5.32.
