'INDIA' GEARBOX. 45310
We have been carrying out tests continuously on the 'India' gearbox. Even with the torsionally free pinions we are not entirely free from the tendency for the 1st. speed to work out. Cases where it has occurred have been when we have been running with no springs in the plungers on the selector rods. We have made sure that the torsionally free pinions have been working correctly and that there has been a definite amount of slack in the thread joining the two pinions together.
We have also tried a different angle of splines. We have made tests with the 30° included angle on the splines using the original solid type 1st. and 2nd. speed pinions and find that both gears worked out. We have tried with the torsionally free pinions with the 30° angle splines. The 1st. speed only worked out.
Our tests with the torsionally free pinion shewed that when the gear is first erected, the tendency to work out is very light and if the gear is jammed in position, it can be run indefinitely without any harm coming to the fork or any other parts of the box. Once, however, the gear has worked out under full load, the teeth then appear to be damaged in such a way that it will continue to work out much more readily and with much more force.
We can g then get the gear we to work out with the
