4 SPEED BOX.

We send herewith Lec. 2024. (original to BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer}, print to R.{Sir Henry Royce}) 2nd. motion shaft for the above, redesigned in accordance with R's memo. R1/M.3.25., in which he indicates the necessity for eliminating the split collar running in the middle bearing.

The drawing shews the features desired by R.{Sir Henry Royce} (refer to sketch in R1/M.3.25.) but we have found it necessary to use a small split collar for retaining in position the middle bearing, but this collar should not be allowed to carry any radial load. This can be definitely provided for by the middle bearing being a good fit on the shaft. On this drawing we have also shewn the clearance of .005 to .015 (which has been asked for by R.{Sir Henry Royce} in the above memo.) at the same thread joining the 1st. and 2nd. speed pinions.

There is one other feature referred to in R's memo., which we shall be glad if you will instruct - that is - in the case of using the solid 1st and 2nd speed pinions he wishes it so arranged that not only are the splines relieved in the middle of the shaft on their sides as has been done hitherto, but that also diametral relief should be given so that the pinion is supported no-where but on surfaces which are symmetrical about the tooth pressure.
