To EH. from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} -2- E1/024/10/19 Contd. SPARE WHEELS AND LUGGAGE. X.3633 Mr. Royce wishes to fit the spare wheels on to the back of the car (not carry the luggage there) and design a suitable fitting to accomplish this. The advantages of this are that we prevent excessive weights being carried by the rear and of the frame, and provide some protection for the petrol tank by reason of the presence of the spare wheels. The weight of the spare wheels helps to make the car hold the road. DETACHABLE RIMS AND TYRES. X.3425 Mr. Royce thinks we ought to have some Goodyear split rims and straight sided tyres on test as soon as possible. PENDULUM LEVERS. X.205 Mr. Royce considers that new type pendulum levers should be sent round to every service station, and should be changed over on cars as they come in. He does not consider it necessary to send round to customers. This should be carried on for three months, and then the position should be reviewed again. If many defective levers are found, then we must consider sending round to individual cars, but if not, the matter might be dropped. The modern cars with centre point steering do not get such severe shocks that the old cars have had to meet. The matter seems all to have arisen since the War, as Mr. Ha. had no cases previous to the War. Standardise the new lever as soon as possible without delaying output. 40/50 H.P. RADIATOR. X.3426 Mr. Royce wishes to standardise the 1" higher position of the radiator, and would like Mr. Day to draw a new bottom tank in which the radiator inlet looks down, to accommodate the 1° rise. The inclination of the rubber joint should, if possible, be so arranged as to leave only one bend instead of a "dog leg" in the copper water pipe from the pump. HIGH TENSION DISTRIBUTOR. X.800 Mr. Royce considers that we ought to have our platinum points welded to the contact blades to save platinum; better still, adopt tungsten points (see other memos) (Contd.) | ||
