Messrs. The Lucas Electrical Co. Ltd. 21st. May, 1920.
Well Street,
Birmingham.

-2-

that our orders shall exceed 2,000 dynamos in all, you would have to deduct from the prospective order for 1,000 dynamos of the new type any number of the present type in excess of 1,000 which you deliver to us.

Mr. Breeden stated that you would be agreeable to this.

We have now discussed the matter and have come to the following decision:-

Before we can pass an order to you for dynamos of the new pattern, we must thoroughly test the sample dynamo you have sent to us and send you our report on same.

If, after recieving our report, you are still of opinion that you can produce a dynamo of that type which shall be so improved that it satisfies us, both as regards efficiency and silence, we will, on reciving your undertaking to this effect, pass you an order for 1,000 such dynamos, subject to the condition that you are to let us have supplies at the earliest possible date and that, in the even of our falling short of dynamo before said supply is available, you will keep us going with dynamos of the type now being delivered to us, but made silent both mechanically and electrically, and the number of dynamos of the present pattern so delivered in excess of those now on order should be deducted from the 1,000 dynamos of the new type forming the subject of the further order.

We hope you will agree to these conditions and that same will encourage you to proceed forthwith with the preparation of jigs and tools for the manufacture of the new type of dynamo.

Other matters were brought to the notice of Mr. Breeden, notably, defect in the cut-outs you supply, and he took with him a switchbox with a cut-out having the defects we complain of. We shall be glad if you will send us credit note for the switchbox in question, or send us a perfect one in place of it.

Yours faithfully,

FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED.
